Let’s
go Climb a Hill
Like I said in the last post, we stayed up pretty
late the night before. We slept in…a lot. We didn’t really get going until
about 10:00 am. We packed up and headed for Quebec City which was only about an
hour away. It was my turn to drive again, but we made good time. Once we were
in the city driving was a challenge….strange small streets, no line on the
roads and very strange roundabouts that aren’t roundabouts…all in all Quebec is
a challenging place to drive in. We worked it out and found a place to park…for
an hour…all well.

From where parked there was a large hill to one
side. We decided it would probably make for a good vantage point to see where
we might want to go. So we climbed up the hill... and stumbled across…a fort??
Turns out we had accidentally found the Quebec Citadel which is the residence of
the Governor General! We poked around there a bit and wandered over to the far
edge of the Plains of Abraham, which happened to be right next to the Citadel.
It was really hot, and we didn’t want to take a really long walk so we didn’t
start wandering around the plains. We intended to head toward the Hotel Frontenac,
but stomachs won out and the need for poutine in Quebec City was too strong. We
stopped for a traditional Quebec brunch at La Bouche. Dodd had a platter which
had a little bit of everything: baked beans, sweet crepes, sausage, pate with
mustard, something akin to chow-chow, a deep fried meat pie ball and ham. I had poutine which was being served with ground pork that day. Delicious! There was
definitely maple syrup in the gravy.

By then it was getting a bit late so we dove into
a souvenir shop to grab a postcard and headed back to the car. We managed to
stumble across a 400 year old canon ball stuck in a tree, and the home of
René Lévesque. We both decided, that
in spite of the not great roads and the challenges navigating, Quebec City
would be a place to come back to. We got in the car and headed on. We were
planning on stopping at a truck stop, but neither of us really relished the
thought. Dodd was driving now and was feeling good for driving, so we decided
to splurge and booked a room at a hotel in Moncton, New Brunswick. We got there
at about 11:00 pm and discovered that we had booked a murphy bed room that would
normally be part of a suite! All well, we got a real bed and a shower, and can
look forward to another one the next day!
Cheers
