Rocks
and Trees…And Trees and Rocks

I lied, there isn’t really much more to say of the
crossing other than we came in and out of sleep often, and both had our
headphones on all night for noise cancelling. We stumbled off the ferry, half
asleep at about 6:45am and found the closest Tim’s we could for coffee and
breakfast. We had landed on our first island. It was a groggy start to say the
least. Newfoundland was a unique blend of short skinny trees and rocks to start
off with. Dodd was a champion as he did all of the morning/afternoon driving
while I passed out.

We had about a 5-6 hour drive ahead of us. The
parts I was awake for were once again picturesque and different from all the
rest.
We were originally planning on
stopping in Gander, but the options were limited, and the place we had planned
on staying was a ski run parking lot, and as it is not ski season it was
blocked off. So we changed our course and headed to Terra Nova National Park. We
stopped briefly in Gander for gas and a snack. By this time Dodd was in need of
a nap so I took over driving and got us to Terra Nova. It was a really lovely
park. Once again, a lot of rocks and trees. Slightly thicker now that we were
in a proper forest, but still not quite what we were used to. There are a few
camping areas in Terra Nova, we picked Newman Sound as it was the farthest
south point and would mean less time to Fortune the next day. It happened to be
the largest campground as well. It was huge! Really nice facilities and they
put us in the ‘No generator’ section which was a bonus.

We managed to book our ferry trip to St. Pierre
with out issue other than the realization that the ferry to come back was later
than we had expected which meant we couldn’t make it back to the mainland until
a day later than we had intended. Now on to our booking of accommodations. We
realized belatedly that we really should have done this much earlier, as
everywhere we tried was full. We sent out several inquires, and a few requests
for wait listing and waited to see what would happen. We had a really great
evening, playing some games and finally broke into our Wayward Distillery rum.
It was pretty darn tasty! We packed it in around 9:15pm just before the
mosquitos attacked. We did, some reading, and I did some writing, and then we
passed out.
