Wayward Newlyweds – Day 1: Victoria

Baby Cuddles

Welcome to the first true entry of the Wayward Newlyweds! So far so good! As I compose this post Dodd and I are sitting in the car on the highway to Tofino stopped because of construction.

The test pack
Our departure day had us up and packing the car at the ‘quack of duck’ as my dad would say. This is to mean really freaking early…5am. We packed quite efficiently and because Dodd did most of the organization and just laid out what he had done to me, we managed to not have any conflicts about how to pack. I have heard this is a thing among couples. Accurate??
Crossing

We got on the road by about 6:10am and headed toward the ferry. We easily caught the 7am which we were aiming for. Shortly into the ride the captain made an announcement that we were heading through a pod of orcas! I saw a few fins, but we were committed to the food line so didn’t get a good look. So, we had a bite to eat on the boat which helped settle the early morning stomachs. We had a pleasant crossing. and made it to Ben and Hillary’s place by about 9am. To which Ben responded with “you monsters!” But we presented him with fresh Pallet coffee and the promise of Floyd’s diner brunch, hand delivered, and he forgave us.

We were then presented with the newest member of the HEYMIKEY clan. Rhea Natalie Tyner, better know as simply ‘baby.’ The wee thing was dead asleep when Ben put her in my arms, and she didn’t bat an eye. I was hooked pretty fast and had some good long baby cuddles for most of the day. She is a legit adorable baby. Like myself and her dad she was born with a crown of thick dark hair. She slept through us chatting and me laughing while holding her, and only really fussed when she was hungry. Dodd held her twice (I have evidence to prove it!) and really, he did just fine. I got a chance to give her a bottle which went well.
Originally, we had planned to head out to a party for a teaching school mate of mine, but the draw of baby cuddles and our early morning lead us to do the very ‘Millennial’ thing of backing out at the last minute. We then ran some errands with Ben and picked up groceries for a Huevos Rancheros dinner. It was delicious, except for the fact that not only did I need yogurt on mine to get through the spice, I had to give up on the second one and just eat the top part. All well, I tried!

By the time dinner was done it was about 9:30pm and all of us were pretty done. Baby had one last feed before bed and then we all crashed around 10:40pm. All in all, an absolutely delightful Day 1 to our trip. Meeting new members of the family and seeing old ones we haven’t in a good long while. Lots of good conversation (not that Ben and I ever have anything to say to each other…NOT!), good food, and tons of baby cuddles!

Cheers
