Wayward Newlyweds – Day 5: Lillooet Lake

Communing

Our first night in our car bed presented some adjustments that would be needed. Mainly, more open windows and deflating the mattress slightly. Both easily accomplished adjustments. We were up around 8:30am, and emerged from the rather steamy car with full lengths pants and shirts to avoid being consumed by tiny flying insects. We slowly broke out bits and pieces for function during the day, and making hot beverages and breakfast. We also set up our borrowed tent to claim the space across the way. We had PB and J on raisin bread and one pack of apple oatmeal to share. We then pulled out our books and read for most of the day. We had some spats with rain, so I retreated into the tent for a short while to read more. We munched on trail mix, chocolate blueberries and chips through out the day and both fell into our own worlds.

De Wet and Carolyn arrived around 5:00pm and we helped them set up as much as we could. We joined them in their set up, and gave a brief tour of our set up. We made some dinner of Annie's mac and cheese with veggie sausage. We had a bit of an adventure figuring out how to drain pasta with respect to not attracting bears…eventually we chose a course of action (pouring it back into the river from whence the water came,) and we had a lovely dinner. There was a moment of concern for getting rained on again. Carolyn (with minor help from me), brought a few driftwood polls back for tarp polls, but then we realized we were not the ones with the tarp. We all got into rain jackets and called it good. Luckily the rain more or less held off and we had a pleasant evening. So much so that De Wet gave up on his jacket and created and evil De Wet from it with sticks and one of the tarp polls. He stayed up through dinner and well into the night.

We had some issues with people walking through both of our campsites as they are on the path to two pit toilets. From ourselves trying to practice what we preach, De Wet came out with the line, ‘Don’t get between the mamma car and her tent’ as a general rule for camp site etiquette.

We were just debating about gathering driftwood for a fire, and hoping that the rest of our group were bringing some up, when they appeared! It was about 8:15pm or so, and by then the sun was breaking through the clouds again, and we helped them set up in a nice sun set, and they had indeed brought fire wood! So we lit a fire and had a good chat and hang around singing old songs. Although Mike broke out Stairway to Heaven far too early in the night….ahem… There was also much Disney sung around the fire, and discussion on the new ‘live action’ versions of several classics coming out in the next little while. We had a lovely time, with a lovely fire and called it a night finally at about 1am, all saying ‘we are so passed our bed time.’

A great camping day!

  1. So happy things are sounding like normal camping experiences! Always learning! :) I love De Wet's evil De Wet! Do you remember asking me about a photo from our own friend camping trips with a clothing body with a noose around it's neck? Exactly the same sentiment! Enjoy and say hi to everyone and stay dry!!!! <3
