Wayward Newlyweds – Day 3: Quadra

They’re Turkeys Walt

The first ‘sleep in’ day on the trip. We got up around 10am when Julian started prepping coffee and thinking it was time for breakfast! We had bacon, eggs, new potato hash browns, and a lovely fruit salad made by several fruits Dodd had picked up either before leaving or on the way. These included two types of mango, a passion fruit, both black and Rainier cherries, apple and fresh raspberries from Julian’s garden. A very satisfying breakfast. We chatted a bit, Julian handily avoided having to go into work, and then we thought it might be game time! Before we got to deep, it was dishes time. Julian got a start and I did some blog writing. After a few minutes Julian said ‘There’s something moving in the grass.’ Turkeys…there were turkeys in the grass. Three adults and three juveniles. Now, many of you know of my aversion to live poultry. Turkeys are the top of this list. But of course, I am writing a blog, and everything must be documented…therefore…I needed pictures of the turkeys… here they are, in all their terrible glory. They started going after the raspberries and that is when they needed to be put a stop to. Dodd did some intimidating walking toward them, and got one of the adults very puzzled on how to escape, as there was a fence in the way…but there is also a Dodd in the way…but there is a fence in the way…I can go over the fence…but there is a Dodd in the way…you get the picture.

Dishes were clean, turkeys were dealt with, now it was game time! We decided on Evolution (for those who don’t know basically you create prehistoric creatures with traits you draw from a card deck and try and keep them fed). I will admit this is one of my favourite games right now. Mostly because I’m good at it! After a few starved creatures, and a few consumed ones, Dodd won out over me by 2 points!!! Argh! All well, still a great game!

We didn’t really need lunch, but we thought it might be snack time, so Julian broke out a gift that we had brought for him…that I lovingly called the ‘creature.’ It was a fresh Durian fruit… yup, stinky feet fruit. We watched a video on how to crack this crazy thing open and set to work. Julian quite successfully got it open in all it’s smelly glory. We decided it might be slightly over ripe, but still good to try. Julian and Dodd both grabbed a piece and I took a much more modest serving and we gave it a go. In truth, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The piece I had tasted like sweet onion with a similar texture to jackfruit. Then I tried one of the bigger pieces and all bets were off. This was not a pleasant experience for me. Very very strange texture…along with sweet onion flavour…nope nope nope. The boys enjoyed it at least.

After durian it was time for another game! We chose Hero Realms (which is a deck building game) and also thought it might be time to try the campaign that Julian had acquired about 2 years ago but had yet to play. So after some research, a few youtube guides watched we felt ready to try. The first encounter was a bit intimidating, but once we got going we were victorious. We paused for a dinner break. Dodd and Julian went down to the Fish and Chip shop down by the ferry and got some tasty things. We ate much food and Dockside Poutine (poutine made with seafood bisque rather than gravy), and then went back to our campaign! The second round felt a bit easier, or at least not as hard hitting. I think we may have gotten lucky for that one. I was briefly concerned that we would have to stop as Julian had an early start next morning, but he said he was committed to finishing! Last round took a while but we all survived and the monster did not! Much fun was had. During our second round, we did have a second visit from the turkeys, and had to chase them away from the raspberries again. One got startled enough to actually take flight and head over the fence.

Once the monster was vanquished, it was bed time. We gave hugs goodbye for the summer, and crashed out by about 11pm.

Cheers
