The Good
Ship Somersby

Waking up was much nicer with a lot more air flow.
We had a leisurely morning with coffee, toast and salsa eggs. Eventually
everyone got into their swim suits. After a bit of hesitation for extra
sunshine, we made our way down to the water, towels, floaties and drinks in
hand. De Wet, David and Dodd were talking a bit about building a raft out of
drift wood. Apparently Jessica originally thought this was a joke…how wrong she
was.

Carolyn and Jessica got in with the floaties and
paddled around for a bit. I got in with my usual vigor. Although I will admit
that it took me a bit longer than usual, but I did make it in and dunked by the
time I got to my waist. This inspired the other ladies and both joined me in
the water, sans floaties shortly after my hair was wet. The boys on the other
hand, started building a drift wood raft. They even went as far to use some
paracord to lash logs together. Jessica and I had some floatie time and after
some lovely drifting and paddling around, the raft was ready and we tied on the
floaties and drifted along. There was a brief pause for emergency repairs after
an ill planed integrity test, but we made it back underway.
De Wet became our uncontested skipper for the
voyage, with David and Chief Engineering Officer. Mike acted as the first passenger,
and Carolyn was the Chief Safety Officer (although her methods left something
to be desired). Dodd was assistant propulsion expert, and Jessica and I…were
the ballasts…or the life rafts I’m not entirely sure.

At some point we thought it might be time for
lunch, so we paddled back, beached the raft and started our massive amount of
curry creation. Dodd made his arugula ‘Palak Paneer’ with didn’t actually have
paneer in it. David made a SPICY chickpea curry. There was tortellini and cauliflower
rice to go with our curry. It was all pretty good…slightly too spicy for some
of us (ahem…me…ahem). From there we all did a small rotation of napping in hammocks
or on the table, or in a tent and playing games. David and Dodd played a few
rounds of Hnafatafel and then a group of us played some Hero Realms.

We had a slow evening, and eventually decided it
was time for burgers for dinner. Jessica took care of the patties, and the rest
of us built buns. At a leisurely pace we had our dinner, and got another nice
fire going. The original intent was to roast some corn in leaf with the fire,
but we didn’t quite start it early enough, and no one was really hungry for
corn, so we just enjoyed the warmth for a while. We also managed to get some
s’mores going to the enjoyment of all…except we ran out of cookies for the
base…all well still good.

Shortly after s’mores, I started seeing a few bats
flitting about. I had seen a bunch our first night with Kelly, feeding off the
water. Carolyn decided to take a wander down to watch the sun set and keep an
eye out for bats. She came back after only about 5 minutes or so to tell us
that there were tons of bats feeding off the lake! We all trooped down to watch
the beautiful spectacle of bats feeding off bugs that were clustering near the
water. I have to admit, that I love bats. I could watch them flitting around in
the dying light for hours. We watched for a good long time. Slowly the flock
dwindled to around 5 and I went back to the fire.
The night was ended with the burning of the last
bit of fire wood, and most of us fading fast. Slowly, but surely pair by pair
we hunkered down in our respective hidey holes and crashed out around 11pm.
As always,
Cheers
