Letters
in the Sand

Day 2 found us up relatively early.
As Ben was up with baby for feeding around 8am, he offered to make us a pancake
breakfast with berry goo. This offer was well received, and we hung around for
pancakes (apparently this was the second ‘we have never made pancakes this way’
in the week as Ben made them with yogurt rather than milk for my lactose
intolerant self). I got one last baby cuddle while a bottle was washed and
prepared. Berry goo pancakes were delicious and very satisfying! Shortly after
we were on our way. We loaded up the tunes and headed towards the Malahat.

The day was really mostly driving, but
it was driving through the beauty that is Vancouver Island. I took several
blurry photos out the car windows as we drove by. Eventually Dodd got smart and
started rolling down the window for me when a pretty vista came into view. We
drove through a fair amount of rain, but it was not a bad drive at all. Dodd
was getting a bit frustrated with silly drivers who go 60kph in the 90kph zone
and speed up to 90 when the passing lanes come up. There was some rage.

We had a brief stop in Port Alberni
for gas and a stretch and continued our way to Tofino. By the time we got there
the sun was breaking through the clouds making much pretty lighting. We made it
into town and had a quick wander around. We got some snacks and a hot beverage
each then hopped back in the car to get to the beach.
We turned in at Incinerator Rock,
but there was a distinct lack of parking. We continued and found the main
entrance to Long Beach where there was plenty of parking! We bought a pass and helped
a lady who was struggling with the machine. Next was on to the beach!

Dodd made the executive decision that
shoes needed to come off and we walked on the warm soft sand of Long Beach. We
put our feet in the water for the start of our ‘Coast to Coast’ adventure. We
had a nice, not too windy, walk down the beach, did some cheesy Instagram-y
sand writing and took lots of pictures. We wandered our way back to the car,
bringing some west coast sand on our feet to dust off in the car. At this point
it was my turn to drive as to avoid the driver rage, and so Dodd could have a
bit of a nap. We switched again in Port Alberni as I was having some weird pain
and got some Tim’s for a snack.

After some deliberation we decided to do a quick stop at Cathedral Grove to see some big trees! We did find the big trees, but we also found a lovely little area with a partially dry river bed. We had some fun checking out the water...it was colder than the ocean water... Anyway, it was just a really sweet little place. A perfect fairy grove, or place to commune with nature and have a chat with the gods. Sadly, we were on a schedule and had to get a move on. We got to Campbell River in time for a quick
bite of dinner at the Beach Fire Brewery then off to the Quadra Island Ferry.
One startled seagull, a seal head and chilly wind later, we made it to Julian’s
place around 9:00pm and settled in!

Julian made us some tea beverages
and then the boys played some Super Smash Bros and I wrote last nights blog
post and watched they beat on each other. We gave up around 1am and crashed
out!
Day 2 Summary – Lots of driving,
lots of pretty scenery and friendly Smash rivalry!
Cheers
