Miles
and Miles

We tried to get up earlier…we really did, but it
is so nice and cozy in the car bed it’s hard to get up sometimes. We finally
got going around 8:00am. Dodd made oatmeal and coffee and I dismantled the bed.
We got on the road by about 8:40am or so, and started what would be our longest
drive to date.

We got Sabriel going again and let the miles roll
by. I have to say I was surprised for the first few 100km’s. Saskatchewan is a
lot more rolling hills right at the beginning than I had expected. Granted
there was barely a tree in sight except cultured, manicured windbreak stands
between fields or around farm houses. It really is a beautiful landscape, but
for hours and hours, it does get monotonous. I can understand now, all
the advice we got saying just drive straight through Saskatchewan if you can.
When you can see single fields to either side that are probably the same size
as the 100 acre farm in Ontario…the scope gets a bit overwhelming for the
brain. I have to admit I fell down on the photos for this day. There was just so much that seemed the same I didn't really know what to take pictures of!

I fell asleep at some point and missed a fair
chunk of the last battle in Sabriel, but I had read, and listened to it before,
so not missing too much for me. We crossed the border around 3:30pm or so, and
shortly into the new province I started noticing trees again! Still lots of
farms, but there were actual woods happening! Dodd was getting a bit tired so
we had some music for a while instead of starting the next book.

We made it to Winnipeg by about 6:30pm, and met up
with a school friend I had not seen for about 15 or so years. Amanda graciously
offered to pay for a hotel room for us for the night as a wedding present! So
we met up with her at the hotel and checked in. We brought bags up to the room
and then grabbed a bottle of Ross’ wine and headed over to Amanda’s apartment.
She made us a lovely chicken and rice dinner and we met one of her rambunctious
cats Sekhmet. She was really sweet and liked to perch on shoulders. We had a
great time catching up and chatting like old times, about old times. It was
great to have another of those experiences seeing an old friend after so long
and just
picking up where we left off as if we had only seen each other a week
ago.
We gave up around 11pm as we were all pretty
tired. We said goodbye and headed back to our hotel. We curled up in the little
bed and were asleep by about 12am.
A successful long drive day.
Cheers
